This classic burgundy red blouse with collar and long cuffs is made of delicate, hand-woven mulberry silk. But don't confuse delicate with flimsy. Silk is a thin but strong fiber. This silk is from the cocoons of caterpillars that feed exclusively on mulberry leaves, hence the name mulberry silk.
For this blouse, the silk threads are spun by hand. A very precise job because the wires are very thin. The same goes for hand weaving silk. It is a process that requires a lot of patience. Hand weaving of silk is an ancient craft that dates back thousands of years, but is still little practiced. The labor involved contrasts sharply with market prices.
At Via India we like to support the artisan weavers who continue to use their handloom against the current of cheap mass production. The result is unparalleled.
The blouse is part of a joint production of Cotton Rack and Via India. Each one is completely handmade.
The red blouse is hand dyed with environmentally friendly color fabric. No so-called AZO pigments are used that are harmful to the environment. This does mean that the color can bleed.
