This jacket is a mix of a jacket and cardigan. It has a supple drape and is hand-woven from brown, undyed sheep's wool from Rajasthan sheep. The sheep are herded by nomadic shepherds.
Unlike sheep in Europe, these sheep mainly graze leaves from shrubs and trees in the Thar desert. The sheep are of the original, native Indian species Magra and Nali.
For as long as shepherds have been tending these sheep, they have had weaving communities weave large scarves from the wool. These scarves measuring approximately 2.50 meters by 1.50 meters will keep the shepherds warm during the cold nights in the desert. The size of these scarves is just right to make clothes out of them. This is exactly what Via India is doing in collaboration with the Indian slow fashion label Cotton Rack.
Today the traditional way of life of the shepherds is under threat. A non-profit foundation helps the herders by buying wool from them, having it weaved by local hand weavers and marketing it. We buy the wool from this foundation.
The lining of the jacket is a thin fabric of silk and cotton. The print is a so-called Dabu print. In this technique, patterns are created with a natural clay paste that adheres to the fabric when it is dyed. The undyed areas form the pattern on the fabric. This is the same principle as batik.
The jacket has an elegant stand-up collar, side pockets and a closure of coconut buttons. It's wearable indoors and outdoors.
