Scarf made of Matka silk. Embellished with Kantha embroidery by rural women of West Bengal. Read more..
This stylish pink scarf made of Matka silk is chic with a black outfit, or style it with every day wear. The scarf has a warm and cosy feel, though is very comfortable as well in a warmer climate. The red Kantha hand embroidery gives a stylish tone-on-tone effect. It is a unique piece.
Matka is the name of the fabric made from silk threads of cocoons from which the silk moth has crawled. They are, as it were, damaged and can only be spun by hand.
Kantha scarves are popular worldwide. Unfortunately, many of these scarves are made by women who are not or hardly paid for it. We buy our scarves from an NGO that pays women fairly for their work. The women embroider at home, in their village. Once a month they take the bus to the village where their 'didi', the woman who founded this organization, picks them up. They receive a fixed price for the type of calculation (simple or complex) per meter.
Embroidering a scarf takes about 15 to 30 days, depending on the number of hours per day the women work. Average embroidery up to 3 hours per day.
