This Kimono Cardigan is woven from wool sourced from herds of sheep from Rajasthan, India. The sheep are herded by shepherds who lead a nomadic life. The cardigan Nali-04 is named after the breed of sheep that supplied the wool for this lovely, warm cardigan. It is number 4 in a series of cardigans made from unsold stock. This unique vest has one patch pocket.
Sheep herded in Rajasthan are equipped to survive in desert areas. They mainly eat leaves from shrubs and trees in the Thar desert. The wool used for this Kimono cardigan comes from two native Indian sheep species called Magra and Nali.
For as long as shepherds have been tending these sheep, they have had the weavers in the surrounding villages weave large scarves from the wool. These scarves measuring approximately 2.50 meters by 1.50 meters will keep the shepherds warm during the cold nights in the desert. The size of these scarves is just right to make clothes out of them.
Today the traditional way of life of the shepherds is under threat. A non-profit foundation helps the herders by buying wool from them, having it woven by local hand weavers and marketing it.
