A deliciously soft, warm wrap. Handwoven of merino wool and silk by women from the village of Sukna, in the foothills of the Himalayas.
The shawl is colored with environmentally friendly, vegetable dyes. That happens at Avani, an organization of local residents of the Kumaon region in the foothilles of the Himalayas. The weavers of this scarf live in a remote village, and are given the opportunity to be economically independent by weaving scarves for a fixed salary.
The silk used is Tussar silk. This is a wild silk from the moth Antheraea Paphia, also called the emperor moth. The silk thread cocoons naturally have a golden sheen. For this shawl the the caterpillars are not harmed. They have left the silk cocoon before the threads are used to spin silk.
