Shiny silk scarf, dyed with vegetable indigo.
The scarf is hand-woven and dyed by hand at Avani, an organization of local residents in the Himalayas who organically grow indigo plants and color scarves manually with them.
The silk used is the so-called Eri side. For this, no caterpillars are cooked alive in the cocoon as usual. Eri silk is made from the silk cocoons that remain after the caterpillars have turned into silk butterfly.
The technique with which the scarves are colored is called shibori. It is a tie-and-dye technique where parts of the fabric are tied off before being dyed.
